Understanding Core GST Return Types for Regular Taxpayers

Every business registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act must file periodic tax returns declaring outward supplies, input tax credit (ITC), and net tax payable to the government.

GSTR-1: Outward Supplies Return

GSTR-1 captures all details of sales, exports, debit/credit notes, and nil-rated supplies made during the tax period:

  • Monthly filers: Due on or before the 11th of the following month
  • QRMP quarterly filers (IFF): Invoice Furnishing Facility available up to 13th of each month
  • Details auto-populate into your buyer's GSTR-2B for eligible ITC claiming

GSTR-3B: Monthly Summary & Tax Payment

GSTR-3B is a self-declared summary return where you declare total turnover, eligible ITC, and pay net output tax via electronic cash ledger:

  • Monthly due date: 20th of the following month
  • Quarterly QRMP filers: 22nd or 24th depending on the state of registration
  • Late fees and 18% annual interest apply on delayed tax payments

Input Tax Credit (ITC) Reconciliation with GSTR-2B

Under Rule 36(4) of the CGST Rules, a taxpayer can only claim Input Tax Credit that is explicitly reflected in their auto-generated GSTR-2B statement generated on the 14th of each month.

Best Practices for ITC Accuracy & Reconciliation

Implement these monthly reconciliation controls:

  • Match purchase register invoices with GSTR-2B before finalizing GSTR-3B
  • Follow up with suppliers who haven't filed their GSTR-1 to ensure ITC is not blocked
  • Reconcile non-eligible credits (Section 17(5) blocked credits) accurately

GST Late Fees, Interest & Non-Filing Consequences

Timely return filing prevents severe statutory consequences:

Return Status Late Fee (CGST + SGST) Maximum Late Fee Cap
Nil Return (No transactions) ₹20 per day (₹10 + ₹10) ₹500 per return
Turnover up to ₹1.5 Crore ₹50 per day (₹25 + ₹25) ₹2,000 per return
Turnover ₹1.5 Cr to ₹5 Crore ₹50 per day (₹25 + ₹25) ₹5,000 per return
Turnover above ₹5 Crore ₹50 per day (₹25 + ₹25) ₹10,000 per return
